Roger Batt notes Rush Skeletonweed prefers arid landscapes and has really deep reaching roots. He asks Brian Wilbur how far down do these roots go, and if Brian would recommend that people try to pull the weed out by the roots, or how best to get rid of it. Brian notes that it is not easy to do. If you had a very small patch you may be able to go in and pull the roots. However, in established infestations, once the root system gets down six to eight feet then they begin to branch out. They will develop what is called "advantageous buds" which are attached to the roots underground. When you pull the main one, the attachments will be severed and new shoots can start up. He also notes that a lot of the time these buds just sit dormant until something happens to the mother plant then these advantageous buds pop up and away they go. Roger confirms that basically when you try to pull the plant you activate its root system and this produces more plants.
